Just found this forum. Not sure how active it is though. Anyways....I have owned a '59 Vette for nearly 30 years. It has been sitting for the last 25 years. I am wanting to rebuild it with a modern day engine/tranny combination. I wouldn't do this but the engine that is currently in it isn't the original. When I got the car it had the entire drivetrain replaced.

The engine-trans-rearend, from what I can ascertain, is out of a 1970 1/2 Z-28. Same engine as the 370HP LT-1 but I think it was only rated at 360HP in the Camaro. Trans is the close ration (M21? Rockcrusher) and the rear is a 4:10 12 bolt. Needless to say this Vette would get up and go. Unfortunately with todays pump gas it is not the best thing to run on the street. Plus, it was more of a quarter-mile type ride. I really enjoyed it in my younger days but I am getting older and would like to still enjoy this car but as a daily driver.

I am hoping I can put a newer Vette engine/trans combination in it so I can burn regular pump gas instead of mixing octane boost all the time. The engine and trans in it were rebuilt many years ago but never run. I was involved in a bad auto accident that left me laid up for nearly two years. Thankfully it wasn't in the Vette. Unfortunately I am not able to work on the car like I used to and am wondering if there is any places that could do this conversion.

Thanks,

Maybe someone has a long memory. In the Fall of 1969 my friend had her '59 Corvette stolen out of Kansas City, Mo. This was a very unusual '59 Vette. It had a 396 and was a very, very fast car. Had a Muncie 4-speed, which at the time of the theft was locked up due to lube level failure. Unknown to her the trans leaked--I was driving about 70 on the Interstate one day and the trans locked up--it made for an exciting few seconds, as the rear end came around and the car went sideways. I got control of it, and had called a buddy and had us towed home. The car was a maroon color, with a colorful, custom made carpet of maroon, yellow, blue etc. It was a convertible, and had no body damage whatsoever.

The car was stolen by someone with a wrecker. Neighbors said it came one afternoon and towed the car away. They thought she was just having it towed in to get the trans fixed, and so didn't raise a fuss.

Maybe someone here knows what became of that car. It would be interesting to find out.

She apparently contacted
Hemmings as well, and they provided the following update:

"This car is currently shown in Florida at 4879 BOCAIRE BLVD ,BOCA RATON . Florida and is registered to PORTNOY,HYMAN"

I'm waiting to see if there is an update regarding whether or not the car was recovered as of yet, but wanted to pass this info on to our members. The listing at Hemmings can be found at the below link:

"In October of 2005, the '59 Registry made the owner of car #1390, Mike Hamilton, a very happy man. With the help of another member of the '59 Registry, it was discovered that his car's window sticker was located in the October 1959 issue of Motor Trend magazine. Mike had some background on his car beforehand, but nothing as significant as that- As you can imagine, Mike was pretty happy to learn this news. More on this discovery here.

As of 5/24/06, a similar reunion of car and history have taken place, this time with car #8878. A member at CAC, Tom Bryant, advised me that he knew of the current owner of this car, and provided me with the details to update the listing at the '59 Registry- When I went to the existing details for that car that I had, I recalled that I'd highlighted from a 1995 Driveline magazine issue, that a man named Ralph Spears happened to have the original bill of sale and some other docs for this car. His goal of the ad was simply to get the docs to the current owner of the car, to help provide a flashback of where the car had been in its life (a dream virtually any classic car owner hopes for when they buy a classic). I provided the ad details to the current owner of the car, and he and I both reached out to the phone number on the 11-year-old ad, hoping the contact info was still accurate. Surprisingly, it was, and tonight the current owner of the car, and the current holder of those documents, had one helluva phone call. I don't want to give away all of the specific details just yet, because the 2 have decided to join forces and tell their stories together in a unified form, which I will present when the time comes."
